You may have seen the term "Christian feminism" floating around online or in conversations with friends, and you may be wondering what it is and how it differs from regular feminism. Christian feminism is the belief that women should be valued and empowered by the work of Christ and the empowering of the Holy Spirit. Here's a deeper look into what Christian feminism is and what it isn't.
What Christian Feminism Is
Christian feminism is the belief that women should be treated equally to men, both in the eyes of God and in society at large. This belief is based on the fact that all humans are created in the image of God (Genesis 1:27), and therefore have inherent worth and dignity. Additionally, Christ died for all people, regardless of gender (John 3:16). Because of these things, Christian feminists believe that women should be given the same opportunities as men, and should not be subjected to discrimination or violence.
This doesn't mean that men and women are exactly the same - we're not! We're each unique individuals created by God with our own gifts, talents, and experiences. But it does mean that we are to view each other as equals deserving of the same love, grace, and mercy.
What Christian Feminism Isn't
Now that we've talked about what Christian feminism is, let's talk about what it isn't. First off, Christian feminism is not man-hating. Just because we believe that women should be treated as equals does not mean that we hate or are angry at men. We simply believe that women should not be devalued or disrespected simply because of our gender.
Second, Christian feminism is not about taking away femininity or striving to become more like men. We celebrate the fact that God made us women! We love being feminine creatures created in His image. We don't view femininity as a weakness - after all, God gave us the unique ability to bear children and nurture life! - but rather as a strength. We embrace our femininity while also striving to live out our God-given purpose regardless of our gender.
How Christian Feminists Fight
Christian feminism is different from other forms of feminism in that we believe that our fight is not just a physical one, but a spiritual one as well. To this end, prayers, supplications, and fasting are crucial pieces of our strategy. We believe that only through Christ do we have victory in this world and the next. We are not alone in this fight; God is with us every step of the way.
